Re: Ledanta Virtual Competition - January 2010

so i thought i might explain how i go about what i do step by step, so theres no excuse, i hope to see heeeeps of entrants after this :o

so what i do is... choose a front from the pics at hand, this time its the fourth one for the stronger nebari to the left, and the feature up the trunk a bit to the right to make a nice big broom. this type of tree will take some time to achieve, but this is how i see it...

your eye should start at the stronger side of the nebari and go up the trunk to the feature on the right, so first movement will be slightly right.(blue arrow)

i was then thinkin to have the foliage triangle slightly to the left, similar angle to eye movement up the trunk, less 90 degrees (green arrow) for a well balanced, static tree.

tree shortened slightly at red cut.

then like a real bonsai, start at the nebari.
january elm 2nebari.jpg
i then have a look at what pics i have, and if there's a branch i like, snatch it and chuck it in. at this stage i also use the clone stamp tool to direct where the main branches come out of the trunk.
january elm 2 branches.jpg
when i'm done with that i look at what pots are available, stands and such, and smash her in a pot... BAM :!:
january elm 2 tree done.jpg
and i usually have a play with filters, but i don't always show you guys what becomes of the filter fondling :D

 but today...

Hey guys this competion isn't exclusive to software users, what about webbos awesome effort with the chalk design, that was beatuiful and he won :P

Thanks aaron_tas for explaining the way you use your software and your approach to design

I had a go with Picture No#1, I liked that as the front and thought I would go with a upright broom style kinda thing.

Depicting the tree as sitting there untouched for hundreds of years.
broom style elm.jpg
The original looks like it has a pretty flat cut where it was pruned, I would give some more angular cuts to help with taper and probably try to hide it on the side near the back.

Good luck y'all :!:

couple more i have seen in this tree, would take some massive work and more ground growing but possible with tilt of angle and some taper inducement.
two designs, one a windswept sort of design in winter silhouette. one of a slanting style in full leaf :D

Maybe if I announce a date for entries to be submitted by - we may get some more virts in this comp! Where are the regular posters for this comp? Is everyone still on holiday?
Cheers,
Leigh.

it probably would hurt to announce a date leigh, i think there are still heaps of options for this tree but if i do any more virts of it my missus is gonna get a bit cranky with me spending so much time on the laptop!

If Jamie doesn't win this then something is wrong :? He has managed to convert a straight trunked Elm into a slanting Ezo Spruce :o There's just no beating that!   In your face Kimura!!

Seriously though, nice work guys :D, and a nice piece of Elm there Leigh

Cheers

This photo software can be cool I wish I new how to use it
Anyway I think a nice big broom would be good.
elm virt.jpg
Just fixed it a touch I had the tree leaning to the left when the movement is slightly to the right.
