yeah i have been thinking about it a lot this morning since looking at the tree, where that dead root is will have to be a start point, or finish point, i am not sure where to go with it though, if i go to the left hand side carve out i will lose some of the taper, if i go around to the right i dont think it will look to good, i am thinking it might have to go up to the left slightly then around to the left side of the new leader?

any thoughts on that will be greatly appreciated

i knew that was coming i will get some sketches done up and post them up, see what the responses are. i didnt plan on doing any carve work until i knew exactly what i want

ok here is the sketch, its a bit light in the branches as the scanner didnt pick up the light pencil lines the best, i had to alter it to get the darkness it has, but it shows where i am thinking of the carve, its the only way i can see it working, it would take out some of that rounded belly look on the right hand side that this tree has.

any thoughts?? and please feel free to have a crack at it as well, all ideas are welcomed

just a bit of an update, this thing has been extending well and is starting to shoot out secondaries that i am working with right now to help thicken the leader and branches these pics were from the 21/2/10 i have only just had a chance to post as i only just remembered

quite happy with its progress right now, i will be letting it growing roots into the ground to help it get some strength and thickness happening

just to show the placement of branches i need to bring the to lowest branches forward more to about 45 degrees or so, when that fills out it will make a much better tree

update going well it doesnt look like there is much change but i am building up the branches which are thickening up well. and secondaries are starting to form.

a little heavier wire was used to add a little more in and out movement but it is quite healthy and strong, feeding heavily and its loving it

just looking back over this thread at the deadwood on the inspiration pics i was wondering how long these take before the wound heals and rolls over?

being that this one has quite a thick and fleshy cambium/bark layer (8mm thick) i am thinking it is gonna take a long time when i carve it to heal and cut paste is gonna be a neccessity, the bit that is off it already which you can see the bark off near the nebari has just dried out and doesnt look like it will roll over, so i am gonna be cautious when i carve.

i also take it that when i do carve it, it will be best to wait till it slows down in growth, as i dont really have a winter here? i dont know if they take a bit of a dormant period, but i guess i could withold water for a bit as they can survive time without water. to induce a dormancy? i know that might be a little dangerous to and would slow the healling proccess down. catch 22's all over the place hey

here is a little bit of an update guys it is comin up real well. the branches are starting to bifuricate very nicely and fill, (thats a fancy word for ramify).

i have also stripped out some of the bark for a deadwood feature, it will need more to come out to take that lump our of the picture. i was amazed at how thick the bark and vascular layers were in some places they were 8mm thick. will make a nice spot to carve, it also looks like it is going to roll over quickly which will be good. i have started to make the cuts for shari and deadwood slightly in towards the live bark as it seems to help heal a bit better. the natural grain of the wood is realy nice, something i will try and mimic when it gets carved.

thanks mate, i have been chopping back to two leaves everytime i trim, this has been working very well so far. other than that its just keeping up food and water and they thrive.

the biggest prob i have had is wasting energy with the suckers that want to grow. i am constantly picking out the new shoots that arent of any use. i have to let the apex fill out to but it will get there especially once the leader thickens some
