Hi Petra, I did it cos I was bored on Sunday.

But it does have some beneficial purposes. Firstly It makes it easier to wire. Secondly it gives me the ability to see the branch structure properly. Thirdly it helps this guy back bud and produce smaller leaves.

Hoping to see it flower as the leaves come back also.

Could you also tell us novices which plants you can defoliate (I know to do my ficuses) but can you do all species?

That list is quite long. Here are a few that I do regularly.

Trident maples, ash, oaks, figs, cherries, apricots, and the boug of course.

Don't do it to pines and junipers. I'm sure others will add to the list. Perhaps of you want to know you could start a new thread?

another update. Had to hack it back again. Trying to control the top and strenghten the lower branch. Need to get some girth in that.

I can see kcpoole's argument that the right lower branch could go, it really isnt adding to the structure, and now starting to droop down and obscure the pot. Reluctant as I am to suggest an irreversible change, I think you could lose it and improve the overall look. The branch above it will fill the space. JMO.

Greth, I agree that the lower right branch could go but I will give a few mores growth before I make the descision. Perhaps there is someone out there who wants to do a virtual with it gone??

Hi Jarrod,
If you want to keep the tree at this angle I reckon you should keep the right hand branch and lower it into a semi cascade or even full cascade position. With the trunk thickness this branch could be quite substantial and would look fantastic when in flower. If you are going to stand the tree up a bit then just hold off and see what it looks like after the move. The yellow pot would look pretty hot with purple flowers. I think boug. would work really well in the cascade or semi cascade style and being a vine you shouldn't experience any lack of vigor.

much much better jezz, that angle works well and the lower right branch works much better with it all now with the angle change, its coming along nicely!

I will get another picture once I cut it back hard and defoliate it in a month or two. Then you will be able to see the branch structure.
