juniper progression

heres a juni i had for sale earlier this yr on the forum for 350 negotiable as it did not sell i decided to do some work on it. here is the progression of the tree over the last 2 years.

i received the tree from my boss when i used to work in a wholesale plant nursery, he was inteding to throw it on the dump pile lukily i managed to intercept him.

2 months ago it received a detailed wiring and repotting

Good job Jarryd, nice and credible conifer shape you have worked into this tree. What breed of Juniper is it? (not very familiar with them)

thanks for the kind words ash it is a Torulosa Juniper also known as hollywood juniper. it has really very corse foliage that is quite large which makes it hard to work with i have found if you clean the foliage back to a pom on each branchlet it makes it far easier when styling and obtaining pads.

Hey Jarryd. That's some great work for less than a year.
Although I think it is still a bit of a dog of a tree I can still see the flashes of talent I know you have for these trees and I can see it becoming a great tree one day.
I think my main points that stand out to me is the obvious curve in the bottom left branch the immature basal flare and an exaggerated apex curve. All things that will come in time with you working it I am sure

All that said it is obvious you know how to get these things going unlike myself. I think I have one juniper that could be half decent. I chopped it back last year (then shoved in a bonsai pot) after it was not needed for a club demo. It seemed to sulk for almost a year but has taken off agian. I was thinking it was due for another work over and after seeing this I am sure but am still lost when it comes to juniper training.
I will start a thread for it and would be grateful for any advice you could give me.

thanks for the points brett i can see what you are saying in regards to this trees flaws and with time hopefully they can be slowly resolved, the basal flair will probably never change with junipers its either something you get or you dont this tree unfortunatly does not have the best base, but i feel this is not quite as important on conifers as with other varieties.

Nice work Jarryd

A bit under used the hollywood I think. I've got one that I cut back gradually from just over 6 feet in 100L bag and it's doing well. No styling yet, but you've inspired to get into. It''ll have to wait till next year now, but I'll put up some pics when I have a go.

hey tony thats a great looking tree mate,

personally i would chop it in half again it has a great trunk and surface roots and would make an incredible chuhin tree.

Yeah mate, the plan is to take it down to the lower level of foliage and do some carving. Maybe jin the top, but at least a bit of shari work.
