air layering a japanese red pine

Hello, Just wondering if anybody has advice on air layering a Japanese red pine?
Is it even possible? Is there a good success rate?
What time of year to begin?

BTW, i am familiar with air layering in general.
I have had a number of successful air layers previously.
But never attempted a pine :/

I have not had the need to layer red pine so not sure. I have layered JBP with about 50% success. Last 2 years I have had about 40% success with red pine cuttings which is higher than the black pine cuttings so I'd guess layering would be ok.

Not having done any on red pine, but would suspect they are OK

So as i suspected, it's a dive into the uncharted

I'll try document the progress as best i can. I'll post any new links or topics related to this feed here.
For now i'll just prep and pamper the tree.
Build it up for major surgery once the seasons cool and the tree slows down.
Keep the suggestions coming guys!

What an article Craig. Where do some of you guys find this stuff

I have not done a Red only because never had one to do. I would say yes to the layer and suggest mid to late spring. It will depend on the size as to how quick, but thinner ones should be able to be removed the following autumn.

I have a mate here who is having great success with vermiculite in pots on JBP layers.

Interesting article Craig. Just 2 things. It is not about Japanese Red Pine. The red pine they are referring to is an American species though maybe some of the findings could apply to JRP it is not necessarily the case.
2. The article is nearly 70 years old. Materials and techniques have moved on a little in that time.

Hi ness,
Over the last year I have done a lot of experimental work on layering Trident Maples. Reading the article that Craig directed us to rang some bells for me. The article talks a lot about callusing. This is a habit that Trident's have also. I have developed a new method of doing Tridents with 100% success rate. I will add a few photos at the bottom of this post.

I am not suggesting that you can layer a pine the same way as a Trident. Pines require a much longer period before roots will appear, but, I think some of the methods used may assist with pines. I did this layer at the School of Bonsai Exhibition, and removed it at Christmas time.
