Aust. National Exhibition (Virtual)?

Thought I'd float an idea here.

AFAIK, Australia doesn't have an annual, truly national bonsai exhibition? Most other bonsai nations have at least one annual national exhibit, if not more. Japan, U.S. Europe all have successful national exhibitions. There are good reasons why this is a difficult undertaking here, state quarantine restrictions and large transportation distances are big ones. Taking nothing away from the AABC Convention Exhibit, or the national collection in Canberra, I still feel a national open to all exhibition of highest quality with awards for the best trees would do wonders for driving standards of local bonsai artists and inspire new enthusiasts?

So if a truly national 'physical' exhibition is too difficult an undertaking here in Australia - we are in the era of digital media, why not a virtual one? As in an online exhibition. A dedicated website hosting a annual photographic exhibition of the countries best trees chosen from submissions and then peer judged as per any other exhibit?

I would say they should be 360° exhibits, such as the ones already available on the website here. It is a lot harder to get a real feel for a tree with a straight photo. I do like the idea though

I like the idea mainly because I like looking at trees on my lunch break.

But I think to get a proper "feel" for the tree you would need to see it in person.

Also, Pup was able to take his tree(s?) to the exhibition in Adelaide from Perth, all he had to do was fill out some paperwork and wait for clearance from the government (or whoever takes care of quarantine).

The AABC. Used to run one in conjuntion with their conventions. So that people who could not for cost or quarantine reasons could not participate.
It also had a cash incentive, I got a first in Canberra in 2004, it was discontinued due to lack of interest. I got second and third in 2005 .
I think it stopped in 2006 .

Yep, this would be the way to go. Jus put something in it for scale so u can tell how big it is to get that wow factor, but the 360 is the way to go. Completely agree!

Yeah I'm with Pup regarding the 360 thing. I like the 360 idea from an interest point of view, but I was envisaging a formal display for judging and the primary image. Maybe as a 'click through' to further info on the tree it may be possible, if the artist wanted to include it?

One issue I see regarding the exhibit is photographing the tree's in a consistent manner. Quality, setting and lighting, so the exhibition appears to be cohesive. Not put together from amateur photographs taken from the all points of the map.
