Hi all ,
Following Rycemans excellent Pine Project and Mike Treemans work on Natives I decided to get some seedlings started so I could roughen them up a bit.. I let all of my natives flower and collected a nice stash of seeds. Planted a few and collected a few from various pots. Only problem is I am not 100 percent sure of what is what. Will properly label when I sow again this spring. Have managed to wire up a few of the bigger ones. Also a Snow in Summer that I wired up as tube stock a few years ago.
Probably getting a bit to old for seedlings ,but sure is fun. Cheers John,
Native Project.

Looks fun John.
with some of those bends and exposed roots - I sense you might be breeding some native 'dragons'.
I look forward to watching them hatch!

The natives are calling John... I hear them (but that is for a different post).
I love what you’re doing here, can only be good for bonsai - I’m excited to see what you make from these. Great work!

Love the post
Last year I collected 3 different types of bottlebrush seeds. Weeping, river (yellow flowers) and a red flowering tree on lake burley. It was good fun and so easy. Natives are definitely the way to go.

Re: Native Project.
Great post John. Once the native bug bites, its a fun and wild ride. I can see some very twisted trees coming out of that lot.
The Lepto ballerina that you are growing, has flowered all winter for me. They are very profuse in flower, very pretty.
Also a new species that I've been trialing - Phebalium - is just stunning in winter flower. They are like you're looking at a waterfall of small flowers. It completely covers the entire tree and the tree appears to easily adapt to cascading growth! Its almost at the point that you can't see the foliage anymore, and you don't need a lot of sun to get a massive flowering. Amazing.
I'd love to see you get stuck into a lot of Banksia and Casuarina John.
'Snow in summer' has got to be one of the hardiest trees I've ever grown. They are absolutely perfect for bonsai. I'm trialing a lot of them as shohin at the moment. Lovely tree.
You should know better than a lot of us John - that growing from seed shouldn't be a deterant, especially for native material. I continue to be amazed at how fast you can develop Australian native material with the right amount of sun and fert.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: Native Project.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Looking forward to spring and some serious growth. Although might have to import some wire to keep on top of them all.
Rory, The Ballerina has to be one of the nicest Lepto flowers around, even better than Mesmereyes and Purple Haze in my opinion. The Phebalium sounds like a real winner ,another for the list. Have two Thryptomene flowering at the moment, another beautiful little plant ,unsure if it will ever thicken up in my lifetime.
Banksia and Casuarina ,gee have enough trouble with the collection at the moment....
Cheers John.

Re: Native Project.
Super results! And really brave to have started these beaut tea trees from seed. That's a bit of a change from trident and Chinese elm seedlings! You're never too old to start bonsai, as you can begin by using very small plants to create accessory compositions, then letting them grow into shohin... and so on. They'll be lovely at every stage.
BTW, John, how old are the three-in-a-row?

Re: Native Project.
Hi Lisa , thanks for the feedback , it has been a very enjoyable experience .The three are a year and three quarters old. I regularly weeded them out of my pots as they came up but was inspired to repot a few from after all the great posts I saw on A.B. Cheers John.
