Repotting Callitris Glaucophylla ?

This was one of the first plants i collected on my Bonsai travells (riverina).It has been in this pot as of june 09. I cut the tap root by half ,and have been finger prunning foliage also bending and a little shari work. In hindsight i probably should have trunk chopped and worked on a new leader, but thats all about learning!!
My question is when should i repot and maybe cut roots back, nebari design etc.The plant seems to go through growth spurts, foliage gets a lighter green tinge to it. The funny thing is i have several and they seem to go through spurts at different times

Yep,

sounds like an aussie native. Each tree reacting to availability of water, food and the different seasons.

I usually repot established callitris now; November. (Canberra)

However the main styling I first did was in autumn because it was a demonstration.

Thanks John. What mix did you pot these into? What advice would you give to someone who has access to quite a few Callitris Glaucophylla growing in the paddock and would like to attempt a bonsai on these great natives? I was going to wait until the end of the month and attack after a good drenching, which I am anticipating soon

Hi Fluorine, I have just re-potted my Callitris last week. Have been using a mix of 50% sieved diatomite ,45% sieved native potting mix and 5% coir with a little of the fines from the sieved potting mix. Plus some native Osmocote. I have to agree the best time is after a heavy rain. Collected a little group of five trees in the middle of winter ,came out like a lump of clay. I think it is possible to take at any time of the year ,after rain. The biggest problem I strike is that they all seem to have a ring of no bark just above the roots. This is just below the soil level The above one is just starting to thicken in the ring bark area. Takes a long time. Hope this helps and good luck with the dig. Cheers John.

It has been a long time but here is a follow up to the first tree I ever posted on Aus bonsai ,thanks to Grant it still lives on. It has been sitting on the benches with very little attention. The jin is still the same ,gets a splash of lime sulphur every now and then. Will get around to carving one day. At one stage I did some wire work and have just been trimming for the last couple of years. Always seem to be moving on to the next project.

Nice development of branches that harmonise with the trunk. The jin works, as is, for me. Not done "by the book", but it's better for that. It can only get better as it becomes more complex.

Another quick update. have had a good year of growth. Starting to fill out and new growth is naturally starting to drop and form those beautiful erratic shapes. Needs a good haircut but I will wait until spring. Cheers John.

Well done John, had a look on line how they grow inland and up north away (naturally), you have nailed the design..fantastic work, as for a haircut , wouldn t touch, screen shot it and keep to IMO
