This is 1 of many Phoenix Grafted junipers that are progressing to the trainer stage . It has had 18 months of growth and is basically ready for its initial style . While these Junipers are quick growers compared to the Sabina Junipers they can handle neglect better . This particular item has been left to its own device apart from a basic watering , allowed to grow on unhindered apart from a slip pot during the growing time . With the foliage thick enough to cover most of the dead wood trunk , its time to shed a bit of light onto the style . There has been some die back of side branches but that’s basically what happen when plants are neglected . I have given the whole project a good work over from trimming of the foliage , re-carving of the entire trunk base and defining and detailing of the grains using a Dremel type carving tool .The dead wood was the brushed with a power wire wheel to remove the fibrous waste , then another  application of  lime sulfur to preserve the trunk and a re-pot into a bigger pot . There has been some structural changes made to compensate for the loss of a couple of side branches . These remaining branches were re- grooved into the dead wood base in a more desirable position . after which it was wired and styled for the  first time . This now will begin its constant training for the next few years using a pinch and grow approach to defining the foliage pads and outline of the overall canopy of the Bonsai . I have looked closely at this deadwood base and can see the possibility of splitting it into 2 separate trunks , basically another option for the future , hence a definite front has yet to be chosen .

This is a thread graft i have discussed on other forums in detail .With the pre bonsai set with an inarch graft that has dislodged and has been reluctant to fuse to the trunk over the last growing season . Whilst i have re-set the inarch graft ,  i decided thread grafting will be another option to try  Using a straw instead of foil wrap to slide the candle through the trunk is a lot easier , the straw is slit and rolled onto the candle .With 2 straws in place on the donor trunk i then drilled the pre -bonsai in the desired position above and below the inarch graft . I have re-set the graft hoping it may fuse however if it doesn’t i have 2 optional new branches to fill the void .Working quickly is a must as the more resin that weeps out of the drill hole the harder the exercise is to get the straw through the hole . Rolling the straw between the finger to compress the new needles  to fit into the pre- sized hole . With the straw inserted through the trunk a pair of multi grips are used to draw the straw all the way through. Leaving the candle shorter than the straw allows the pliers to be used without damage to the tip of the new candle . With the new candle pulled through the hole i have remove last years needles to insert the branch as far as possible , then remove the strawI then move onto the second thread . With both the threaded candles in position and the straws removed , its a matter of sealing the holes and it back to the grow benches . Now this should fuse in a season or two depending on the strength of the growth in both the donor and host . Cheers Alpineart
